Biography
Originally from Durham, Jane moved to London to study and in 1999 graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Ceramics.
She rented her first studio space at Clockwork Studios in Loughborough Junction before moving to York where she set up a ceramics workshop at her home. Here she continued to develop her work, exhibiting widely throughout the UK and abroad, also producing pieces to commission.
In 2011 Jane took a break from making, to help her husband set up a microbrewery in York. After a longer than expected diversion into brewing (over 10 years), Jane is now back in her studio and enjoying working with clay once again.
Work
Jane combines painting and ceramics to make three dimensional paintings. She loves the outdoors and paints in an intuitive way, laying down colour and marks often informed by memories and experiences of land and seascapes.
Using expressive brushstrokes Jane creates abstract landscapes on the inside of slab-built earthenware vessels, the form acting as a frame for the painting within. In contrast the chalky white exteriors are calm and precise with clean-cut edges emphasizing shadow and line.
Her more recent work focusses on exploring the textures and rhythms of the natural environment. Influences here include aerial photography, topography and the fossil record.
